Welcome to Thunderblade

A Quick Peek at the Preliminary Works

Women in Comics

Being a woman who enjoys comics is challenging enough, let alone actually trying to break into the medium. Most comic writers think a "strong female character" begins and ends in a few specific boxes.

  • Sensible footwear and a deliberately de-eroticized set of poses [The brief Wonder Woman reboot from a few years ago when they gave her that stupid jacket]
  • Emotionless ice queen who doesn't need a man (and don't call her babe) [Barb Wire, Elektra, most female "anti-heroes"; especially ones that had terrible movies about them about a decade ago]
  • Deliberately erotic--i.e. is promiscuous and usually naked or half-naked, but she continues to draw attention to this fact, because she is sexually liberated after all [Starfire from the Teen Titans books]

With my book (art by CJ Rezendes; story by MD Rezendes) I hope to push the boundaries and break out of the boxes. I hope to have fully realized characters with diverse body types (and no, not just Tall Slender Woman with Perfect Boobs; Tall Slender Woman with Perfect Boobs and Perfect Hips; or Tall Muscular Woman with Perfect Boobs) and real, honest-to-goodness development. I hope to have racial, sexual and gender diversity, deliberate reasoning for costuming choices, and a set of strong female and male leads.

Currently, the art is slow going, as I am still developing the art and coloring style, trying to come up with something that works for me, but also fits in the style of the story I want to tell. The script is coming along nicely, and I hope to have a few pages done and up by the end of the month (August, 2014)

Keep your eyes peeled, my lovelies. Art and story previews to come!!!
